2/1/06 - Lesson 18: The Call of Abraham (Genesis 11:10-12:9) |
Wife's sick -- we're staying home. These are preparation notes only.
1.Read Joshua 24:2. Describe Abram’s family's relationship with the Lord before Gen 12:1.
Joshua 24: 2 - Joshua said to all the people, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods."
Abraham's family was an idolatrous one which they worshiped false gods. God had shown them mercy shortly, when they started worship the true God.
1b. Where did Abram live when God called him? Consider Acts 7:2-4. Did Abram go directly to Canaan?
"Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, and said to him, 'Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.' Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living.
2.What is the command that God gives to Abraham (in 12:1-3)? What specifically would Abraham have to give up? Why does God give such a command?
He had to leave behind him those who were exceeding dear to him. All those that he love, friends, his house, his country, flocks and herds.
"By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went."—Hebrews 11:8.
- He gave up his stability. Abraham did not know anything about the country that he was going to.
God would like them to give up the idolatrous past, leave the pegan society.
3.What benefits will Abraham receive if He obeys God’s call? Explain each of these blessings in your own words. How did God's promises seem to go against human reason and seem impossible?
"I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."
4.What does 12:1-3 tell us about the character of God? Consider that this was all Abraham knew about Him.
5.What was God’s stated purpose for Abraham? How would the people of the earth be blessed through Abraham? Does God's promise to Abraham "look back" to any other promise God had made so far in Genesis?
We, the elects, benefited from him through Jesus Christ, to partake the covenant.
6.How was Abraham’s faith tested after he reached Bethel?
7.Throughout this section, how does Abraham demonstrate his worship of God?
Small Group Questions:
1.How does Abraham’s experience parallel your own?
2.How is God testing your faith in Him currently?
3.Is there anything left in you that accords with your “old manner of life” that needs to be given up? (Eph 4:17-24)
4.What are some biblical promises that are having a particular sweetness in your life presently?
